Legal Conviction, Evangelical Conviction

Legal Conviction:
Sinner is aware of his sin and filled with terror of the Wrath, Holiness and Justice of God against sinners and flees from Him
(Examples: Cain, Esau, Saul, Judas...)

What's the difference between Legal conviction of sin and Evangelical conviction of sin?

Evangelical Conviction:
Sinner is filled with fear and dread of God's justice, but also has a Godly sorrow over sin, repents of it and
turns his eyes to Christ in a just hope in the Gospel for forgiveness of sins.
(Examples: Hezekiah, the Ninevites, David, Peter...)

"Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off"

" and said to Moses, You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die." Exodus 20:18-19

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up" John 3:14

"And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." John 12:32 ESV

I have been thinking about this for a few weeks. Any thoughts?

Romans 3:20 says
"by the law is the knowledge of sin."

The law functions as a mirror so that we can see what we are really like.

John Bunyan quite helpfully says,

"Legal conviction is when a man doth see his sin by the law, yet doth not through faith and love close with Christ for deliverance from it."

Little late on commenting here. Love your definition by Bunyan. As I'm thinking - it reminds me of how we can fail by only preaching law, only laying burdens on peoples backs without ever lifting a finger to help by showing the promise, grace and hope that is in Christ alone. The law is so good. And when used lawfully so good for us. But law preaching without the gospel, without Christ, without enabling grace promised leads to Legal conviction resulting in us simply trying harder, with more self-effort and not more dependency on Christ and grace.

Grace: The good will of God toward us and the good work of God in us.

Come, rejoice with me in the glorious truth that death died in the death of Jesus Christ! Everyone is now welcome to come and freely take the water of life. (Rev 22:17)
